![]() One would be to say players must watch this scene, take away their controls and stop them moving but take away their fun. Do you wanna shoot her while I go loot over there? We need to move on." We figured it doesn't fit. When you played it alone, you really felt like "Oh my god, what do I do?" But in multiplayer it was more like "Ehh, I don't care. It had a tragic moment, this little girl that was infected and the players had to decide whether to kill her or not. Then we started developing the game and when we made the first benchmark - which is what we call the first finished level you could play - it really had all of this. We felt like we were going to make the most depressing, sad, tragic zombie game in the world. I mean, Yager is coming from Spec Ops right now, so we knew how to make sad games. JF**: I'll be honest, when we first started developing the game we didn't expect the level of comedy in our trailer to happen. **Has the series settled on a more comedic tone? The first game had that very sombre, serious trailer but the games themselves have never been that emotionally deep. Yager did an awesome pitch and that's why we brought them on. We sent this out to several developers to create the pitch for the game. JF**: We were single at the time! ĬL: When we planned Dead Island 2 we had a vision of what we wanted to do. **How did your becoming the main developer come about? So if you're playing on PS4 and I see you're online through PSN, I can still send you an invite to play with me. JF: We still want to give players some choice. It'll try and find the right people to put with you. What kind of player are you? Maybe you're a slow-paced explorer or you like to get in fights a lot. It looks for your friends, people you've already played with, similar play styles, levels. It looks for the people you'll have the most fun with and puts them in your game world. We also have a very intelligent matchmaker system that works in the background, so you don't have to do anything. It's a bit like Journey.Ĭarsten Lindner**: Of course, yes. You don't have to go into a menu and pick a server - you're always playing with others. You're always connected and you all play in a shared world. Before, if you wanted to play together you had to say to the other player "Can you come and join my game?" Then he left his game and joined my game and that specific point in the story, we play, then he returns to his game. You are connected to a server and there are going to be other players in the same world. Whenever you start the game - and if you unplug the cable or otherwise set it to offline, it'll still work, but it's meant to be played with others - you go online. We doubled the player numbers and it's a seamless approach. So we thought that's the part we should really work to improve. When you look at Twitch, what people were really having fun with was playing together, having fun slaughtering zombies. When we started working on Dead Island 2, we looked at what people embraced about Dead Island. I’m calling it now, Dead Island 2 will be full of people running around, breaking immersion and anything in the game world they can at every turn.Jörg Friedrich:** I think the biggest change to our approach has been multiplayer. KitGuru Says: Trying to coordinate that many cooperative players sounds like an exercise in futility. These seven other players can’t be killed, as the developer didn’t want to make Dead Island 2 a competitive game, but you do compete with them for kills and weapon drops. It seems more geared towards you playing with strangers than friends, because let’s face it, when was the last time any of us managed to coordinate seven of our friends to do anything at the same time? This is the same sort of singleplayer-multiplayer that we’ve seen in Watch Dogs and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity, where the multiplayer is designed for people you don’t know to just show up in your world at random when the option is turned on. ![]() ![]() “You can play alone if you want,” game director Bernd Diemer told GameTrailers, “but as soon as you’re connected and you’re willing to play with other people, they will join your world, your server.”ĭead Island 2’s trailer doesn’t quite have the weight of the one from the original game… Dead Island 2 on the other hand, is following on from the trend of many games recently announced at E3 and will have drop in/out multiplayer, for up to seven other people. The original Dead Island was never hailed as the greatest game ever or revolutionary in a way beyond its debut trailer, but it did offer a fun way to slap zombies with your friends. ![]()
